This advanced-level course is designed for students who have a strong foundation in music production and mixing and are ready to refine their skills to a professional standard. Students will explore in-depth mixing techniques, including advanced EQ and compression strategies, parallel processing, mid/side processing, multiband dynamics, and automation. The course also covers mixing for various musical genres and post-production applications, such as film, television, and podcasts. Through critical listening exercises and hands-on projects in Pro Tools, students will develop the technical expertise and creative approach needed to craft polished, competitive mixes.

What You’ll Learn

  • Advanced mixing techniques: parallel processing, mid/side processing, and multiband dynamics
  • Time-based processing to add depth and dimension
  • Finalizing mixes for different playback systems and preparing deliverables for mastering and remixes
  • Hands-on practice in Pro Tools with critical listening exercises to develop a professional ear

Required Hardware

  • MacBook Pro : A reliable, powerful computer is essential for running Pro Tools and handling audio software efficiently.

  • Mixing Headphones : High-quality headphones are necessary for accurate audio monitoring during the recording, editing, production, and mixing processes.

    Closed-back options: Beyerdynamic DT 770, Audio-Technica ATH-M50X, or similar models.
    Perfect for isolation, effectively blocking out outside noise. They are typically a more durable headphone.

    Open-back options: Sennheiser HD 650, Beyerdynamic DT-770 PRO, or similar models.
    Provide a more accurate sound ideal for critical listening and mixing. However, they are limited to use in quiet spaces and can be more fragile.

  • iLok : A USB device that is required for managing and storing licenses for Pro Tools and various plugins.
